Eromanga

Distance from Quilpie: 108km
Population: 80

Welcome to Opalopolis, the nickname given to Eromanga because of the huge amount of opal found in the region. Eromanga, named after an Aboriginal word meaning ‘hot, windy plain’, lies 108km west of Quilpie and has a population of 80. It’s famous on two counts.  The first is for being the furthest town from the ocean in Australia and the second is for producing around 1.5 million barrels of oil per year.

The Old Royal Hotel, built in 1885, is one of the original buildings in the town and was once a Cobb & Co Staging Post. The rustic outdoor machinery museum found in the main street and Object Theatre that is being developed is definitely worth a visit. The museum is next to a covered playground and park with a stunning mining memorial, inlaid with opal.
